Things went horribly wrong. It was a real mess. We tried to {compensate|mitigate the situation, but it was like trying to stop a tsunami with a cocktail stick. We're still picking up the pieces and feeling the sting of this unmitigated catastrophe.

This problem has spiraled out of control. It's a total fiasco. We've tried everything to fix it, but nothing seems to function. At this point, it feels like we're hopelessly stuck. Frankly, I don't know what else to do. This is a mess of epic proportions.

Or were we just living in a simulation gone wrong?
A Disaster of Epic Proportions

Thousands were left beneath rubble, their fate uncertain. The scale of the disaster was unprecedented, rendering survivors to confront a future forever changed.
Rescue efforts sprang into action, struggling against time and dangerous conditions to locate those still alive. The nations watched in horror as the full extent of the disaster revealed itself, offering condolences to the stricken population.
Worst Day Ever
It all started with my case of morning hair. I couldn't make it to look presentable. As I was getting ready out the door, I trippedover and spilled all over my new shoes. To make matters worse, I was completely late for work.

It all started out horribly with a simple mishap/incident/screw-up. But then things went from bad to absolutely terrible. A series/chain/cascade of unfortunate/awful/disastrous events unfolded/occurred/piled on top each other, leaving me feeling like I was in a nightmare/horror movie/comedy of errors. It's the kind of situation where you just want to throw your hands up.
